The AI Marketing Audit Every C-Suite Leader Should Be Asking For Right Now

You don't need to understand how AI search works to know it's already changed how your customers find you. You just need one number: fourteen months ago, AI-generated answers appeared on about 1 in 15 Google searches. Today, they appear on nearly half of them. That's not a trend your marketing team is watching from the sidelines — it's already reshaping whether people find your business at all.
Most leadership teams haven't checked whether their marketing program has kept up. Here's why that matters and what to ask for instead of assuming "we're doing SEO" still covers it.
The stakes, without the jargon
When an AI answer appears at the top of a search, people click through to an actual website far less often — roughly half as often, by some measures. And about 1 in 4 people now stop searching entirely once they've read the AI's answer. They got what they needed without ever visiting anyone's site.
Here's the part that should get a leadership team's attention: being the company that ranks #1 on Google no longer means you're the company AI is telling people about. Most companies getting cited by AI are not the ones ranking highest. Being good at traditional search and being visible to AI have become two different things, and a marketing team that's only measuring the first one is flying blind.
This isn't limited to search, either. It's touching content, social media, and advertising and much more.
Five questions worth asking your team
Are we showing up when AI tools answer our customers' questions? Someone should be testing the real questions your customers ask, in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers, and checking whether your company gets mentioned, left out, or described incorrectly. And doing the same test against your named competitors, so you know exactly where you're losing ground.
Is our content and social strategy built for how people actually find things now? Two-thirds of consumers now search for things directly inside social apps instead of Google, and AI content tools have become the default way most marketing teams produce social posts and video. That's not inherently a problem — but it raises a real question: is anyone checking that AI-produced content is accurate and on-brand before it goes out, and is your best content actually built to travel beyond the app it was posted in?
Is our paid advertising getting real oversight, or just more automation? AI is making ad targeting and creative production genuinely more efficient for most companies. It's also produced a wave of costly mistakes — inaccurate claims, off-brand creative, bad targeting — because most teams have adopted the automation faster than they've adopted any oversight for it. The question isn't whether you're using AI in your ad program by now; nearly everyone is. It's whether anyone is checking the output before it spends your budget.
Is our best content actually trustworthy to an AI system? The things that make a page rank well in classic search and the things that make an AI system trust and quote it are related but not identical. This is a real, specific gap worth having someone check — not a reason to redo your whole content library, just to know where the gaps are.
What's being said about us where we're not even looking? AI systems draw on discussion happening in places most companies have never marketed — Reddit chief among them, which is now one of the most-cited sources across AI-generated answers, ahead of most traditional media. Whether or not you've ever had a presence there, conversations happening there are shaping how AI describes you. Worth knowing what they say.
What to do
None of this requires rebuilding a marketing program that's working. It requires an honest, evidence-based look at where you currently stand across each of these — not a guess, and not "we'll be fine, we've always ranked well." The companies getting ahead of this right now are the ones treating it as a baseline to establish, not a fire to put out. The ones waiting are going to find out how far behind they are at a worse time than now.
